Some Rough Cut Video from Tonights STEM Event and Dinner With Marta and Gene Kranz

For those members who couldn't attend tonight, an 8 minute video that I shot and did a very rough cut. Dave Kovar's remarks, the mission vest ceremony and a short story from Gene about mission vests. More video to  come and I plan to film the launch events on Friday and Saturday. Thanks to Dave Kovar for the great job organizing the event. Gene Kranz is a personal hero of mine and it is surreal to spend some time in the same room with him. Look for Lowell Grissom - brother of Gus Grissom (Gemini and Apollo 1 astronaut) and the owner of the Moonrise.  The Moonrise was a perfect venue for the event and there is quite a bit of memorabilia in the lobby. Much work to due on Friday and Saturday for the launches.

We are continuing to meet at  Bandana’s BBQ Sunset Hills. Lets us know what you think about meeting at this location. Even though Bandana’s Sunset Hills doesn’t have a minimum food purchase, we are encouraging members to purchase something to support the use of the room. We have the room from 6:30 to 9:00 and we’ll need to leave promptly since 9 pm is the closing time.

 

The room will be available at 6:30 PM and  the business meeting will start at about 7:00PM. We'll need to be out of the room by 9:00 PM (closing).

Change of Launch Location for Saturday May 17th Apollo 11 Boy Scout Launch at the Science Center

This message was sent by Dave Kovar to the volunteers who will be helping on Saturday. I wanted to expand this to the entire club membership and interested parties since there have been post in the pasts listing the event occurring in the archery field. I've heard word of some spectators who are interested in attending (but not participating in the contest) and want the change of venue notice available on the club web site.

Hello Everyone!

For the SLRA Precision Duration Model Rocket Competition this Saturday May 17th, we decided to change the rules a little bit. Instead of each scout getting to launch only once, they will be able to launch their rocket twice. We will take the better of the flight time that comes closest to 30 seconds as their official time. Both engines will be provided at no cost, compliments of the Missouri Space Grant Consortium.

The venue site for the launch and awards ceremony has changed as well. The launch will take place at the Forest Park Central Field which is located north of the Science Center on the opposite side of the golf course (see attached map). This field gives us a much bigger launch area for recovery. The awards ceremony will take place in the Planetarium Lobby, or possibly just outside the entrance to the planetarium

The times have not changed. the competition will take place from 9:30 - 12:45 and the awards ceremony will be from 2:00 - 2:30.

For the team competition; Achievement Certificates, signed by Gene Kranz, will be presented to the members of the top three finishing teams.

For the individual competition, plaques will be awarded the the top three scouts achieving a flight duration time closest to 30 seconds. The plaque going to the top finisher contains a foil fragment actually flown aboard the Apollo 11 spacecraft. The plaques and foil fragment are being provided by the Bonne Terre Space Museum.

Official sponsors of this event include the St. Louis Rocketry Association, the Science Center, Missouri Space Grant Consortium, and the Bonne Terre Space Museum.

No Elsberry High-Power Launch this weekend (April 12-13)

The club has been in contact with the landowner of the Elsberry field and was informed that it is too muddy, following the rain earlier this week, for us to use the roads. Therefore, there is officially no launch this weekend.

We also wish to make clear that this does not mean there will be another high-power launch on a later weekend. There may be only a few weekends left before the fields resume their "day job" of growing corn and soybeans. We are watching this on a week-to-week basis, and if it becomes possible for us to have another launch we will put it on the calendar here ASAP. Thanks again to those of you who filled out the RSVP form to let us know you have rockets to fly.

Wednesday May 14th Welcome Dinner for Gene and Marta Kranz

 Last Friday, I met with the Moonrise Hotel Banquet Coordinator Wendy Walker.  We are now set for our Welcome Dinner for Gene and Marta Kranz.  The event will be held in the Apollo 11 Room.  This room provides us with an awesome location to have our dinner; with privacy, plenty of space, round tables that accommodate up to 10 people, and wet-bar for purchase of beverages (soda, tea, coffee, and alcoholic beverages).

The cost to attend this even is $35.  The dinner selections are as follows:

1.  Mahi Mahi with Brown Rice Pilaf and Grilled Asparagus
2.  Roasted Chicken with Potato Gouda Gratin and Roasted Brussel Sprouts with Grapes
3.  Pork Loin with Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Green Bean Amandine

All three dinners come with a garden salad for starters.

Here is a listing of the following club members who will be attending:  Dan Crank, Don Hanson, Heino and Janna Pull, John and Jackie Buckley, Ken Gianino, and myself.
If possible, I would like to collect everyone's dinner selection and money tomorrow at our meeting.

I am planning on having scale model rockets for the table center pieces.  The scale theme is famous NASA and Science Center rockets.  If you have a rocket you would like to show off, let me know.  John Buckley's Thor-Able comes to mind as a perfect centerpiece for the table that John Lakey will be seated at.
We have the room reserved from 3:30 - 8:00 pm.

Apollo 11 45th Anniversary Commemoration Update

The activity level in organizing the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary Commemoration has stepped up significantly over the past several weeks.  I spoke with John Lakey (SLSC Planetarium Director) today.  He informed me that 160 students have signed up to participate in the Friday May 16th Apollo 11 45th Anniversary Commemoration Education and Outreach Event.  That leaves only 90 spaces left.  All Fourty-four rocket kits have been picked by the local area Boy Scout troops who have signed up for the Precision Duration Model Rocket Competition that is going to be held Saturday May 17th at the SLSC Archery Field,  Nearly all of the scouts will be participating in the May 3rd pre-launch activity at Buder Park.  Lots of volunteer help is still needed for the May 3rd Buder Park and the May 17th SLSC activities.

The Welcome Dinner with Gene Kranz is still on for Wednesday May 15th at the Moonrise Hotel.  I will be going to the hotel on Friday to meet with the Banquet Director to discuss detail for this event.  I am hoping to send out the cost information for attendance to this event on Friday.  One change, the dinner is going to be held in the Apollo 8 room.  Earl Mullins, President of the Bon Terre Space Museum, is providing a $200 donation for pay for rental of the Apollo 8 room.

I met with Anna Green today (SLSC Education Director), to discuss the presentations by Gene Kranz that will be given during he Friday and Saturday events.  She is going to start putting together the PowerPoint presentations so that we can get them sent off to Gene for his approval prior to the event.

Construction of my Apollo 11 Saturn V is continuing.  I have completed putting on all the wraps and am now working on the engine shrouds and fins.  I can't wait to put it on the pad.

I am still looking to someone with a truck to haul the club trailer around on May 3rd, 16th, and 17th.  Let me know if you can help me out on this one.

RSVP form for possible second Spring High-Power launch now available

Our first Spring 2014 launch on March 22 was a great success - thank you to all who participated! We may be able to have a second high-power launch in Elsberry this season, but this is not guaranteed. Several factors may prevent us from holding another launch, including the landowner's planting schedule, weather, and lack of flyers with projects to fly.

We have posted a new RSVP form to gauge interest for a possible second high-power launch. If you would like to attend, please fill out the form to let us know when you can come and what you would like to do at the launch. We will use the data to help us choose the best days to schedule a launch since our group is small, and we are so dependent on volunteers to make the launches successful. If we receive poor response, we will likely cancel any scheduled launches so this is the best way to avoid that situation. We can operate under regular commercial launch rules, or research rules and it is very important that potential research fliers fill in their preferences so that we can insure the launch is setup for research rules (and that we have the right people available for research fliers!). Spectators are always welcome at our launches and do not have to be members. If you are a spectator, it would be a good idea to fill out a form so that we can contact you directly if the launch must be canceled.

Please fill out the new form covering the new dates even if you submitted a previous form for the first spring launch.
