Addieville launch status

An update on our launch status for this Sunday (February 26):

The launch is still ON, but we are watching the weather forecast closely. Right now, it appears likely that it will be overcast in the morning with rain starting in the afternoon. We are planning to begin setting up at 10:00am and opening the range by 11:00am, but our flying time will probably be limited by the weather, so arrive early if you want to fly.

As always, please check the St. Louis Rocketry Association website for the latest launch status on Sunday morning before traveling to the field. In the event of a cancellation, we will also make an announcement via our email list as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please email admin@stlouisrocketry.com.

Tuesday, February 21, 2017 General Membership Meeting Announcement

Two items of note:

  • After this month's business meeting, Rob Chapie will lead a short discussion about making research motors.
  • The weather forecast is looking pretty good for our high-power launch next Sunday (February 26) in Addieville. This will be discussed at the meeting, but at this point, it looks like a GO! Feel free to email us at admin@stlouisrocketry.com if you are planning to attend the launch and let us know what you're bringing.

SLRA is having our regular monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, February 21st, at our  meeting location: Google Map Link

The room will be available at 6:30 PM and  the business meeting will start at about 7:00PM. We'll need to be out of the room by 9:00 PM (closing).

Addieville launch – new tentative date February 26

Our new planning date for our next high-power launch in Addieville is Sunday, February 26. As before, this date is tentative and depends on weather conditions. Please continue to check the website and watch for email announcements as we get closer.

Pads of all sizes will be available, from 1/8" rods to 1515 rails. As of this month, we also have a new, higher FAA waiver at Addieville - 17,500 feet AGL with no need for call-in windows! These new waiver privileges are thanks to the efforts of our Tripoli Prefect, Rob, for handling all of our communications with the FAA, and also to all of the SLRA flyers who continue to fly safe rockets and fly them responsibly.

If you have any questions, or would like to give us any advance information about rockets you plan to fly, please email me at admin@stlouisrocketry.com. In particular, if you are planning a certification flight, please let us know ahead of time so we can ensure that the right people are available to sign off on your flight.

Secretary, St. Louis Rocketry Association

Items from tonight’s meeting

As before, we have a few items from tonight's discussion to make you aware of:

  • If you are planning to attend the Addieville launch on January 29 (still tentative until we know what the weather will be), please email me at admin@stlouisrocketry.com to RSVP. We will need to stay in contact with flyers in case the weather is borderline, to make sure we don't put the expense and effort into setting up for a launch that no one attends.
  • The January Addieville launch will be held under the same FAA waiver as the previous launch (standing waiver to 8500' AGL with call-in windows to 14500' AGL). We are pleased to report, however, that beginning in February, we will have a new, higher waiver: 17500' AGL standing, with no windows required! Thanks go to Rob Chapie and his contacts with the FAA for making this happen, along with thanks to the entire club for running safe launches and flying safe rockets - our good track record makes this possible.
  • John Buckley and Gary Cole are interested in hosting a two-day launch in the spring at the Walnut Grove site. John's thought is to plan this for around the beginning of May, after farm field launches have wound down for the growing season. If you are interested in helping plan this event, please email admin@stlouisrocketry.com and I will pass your info on to John.
  • I will soon be coming up with a launch schedule for our Buder Park launches. We will have something similar to last year, one launch per month and probably on the weekend following the monthly meeting, but we plan to try a mix of Saturday and Sunday dates. If you are interested in helping to plan and run these launches, please email me at admin@stlouisrocketry.com.

Thanks,
Dan Crank

Items from last night’s meeting

We have a couple of discussion items to pass along from our December meeting, with a request for feedback.

The first is that there was some interest in returning to our excellent high-power field in Addieville, IL for a winter launch. We have tentatively picked Sunday, January 30 as a launch date. This depends on a number of things, weather conditions chief among them, but we wanted to go ahead and put something on the calendar to plan around. If you are interested in attending a winter high-power launch, please e-mail admin@stlouisrocketry.com and let us know what you might plan to fly.

The second is that we are going to have another how-to session at the January meeting and it was suggested we poll people for the topic. We have three suggested topics: making research motors (Rob Chapie), rocketry videos (Dan Crank), and fin beveling using a routing table (Jack Oney). If you plan to attend the next meeting on January 10 and would like to vote for one of those three topics, please email admin@stlouisrocketry.com with your vote. The other two topics will be presented at future meetings.

Happy Holidays from SLRA!
