May 14 Buder Park launch is GO – amended start time of 9:00 am

All,

Our model rocket launch tomorrow at Buder Park is still GO - although the weather will probably not be as nice as it was last time. The weather forecast is calling for 17-18 mph winds all day. Per the NAR safety code, we can only fly safely in 20 mph winds or less; although we do not have a way to precisely measure the wind speed at the field, we will be watching it carefully and may have to cut things short for this reason.

Also please note that the setup time for this launch is 9:00 am rather than 8:00 am. As we get into the hot summer months, we will likely revert to an 8:00 am start time so we can get our flying in before heat and humidity become uncomfortable, but that clearly won't be a problem this month!

If you want to attend the launch but will be arriving later than around 10:30 am, please call my mobile phone at (314) 630-7619 to make sure we're still there, and the launch has not been cut short because of the wind. If I don't answer, it is likely because we've closed up and gone home; I will try to update the website from the field in this event but I can't guarantee that I'll be able to do so.

Thanks, and hope to see you at the field!
Dan Crank, SLRA Secretary

Launch fees for Buder Park launches

I neglected to mention launch fees last week when I announced the park launch scheduled for Saturday. Each flyer or family (i.e. parent with young children) who is not a paid member of SLRA will be charged a launch fee of $3. This covers as many flights as you want to do for the day, and goes towards upkeep of our launch equipment and purchase of new equipment.

SLRA members who have paid 2016 dues, or new members who want to join at the field, will fly for free. This is a change from last year's policy, when club members paid the launch fee in addition to their dues, but we felt this was a good tradeoff to give people incentive to join. If you want to check to see whether we've received your dues payment, or just don't remember whether you renewed or not, please email admin@stlouisrocketry.com and I will be happy to check.

The weather forecast for this weekend looks terrific, so we hope to see a lot of you at Buder Park on Saturday!

Group hotel rate for May 21-22 NAR Regional Launch

Our second announcement from last night's meeting is that John Buckley was able to secure a group rate of $74.95 plus tax per night at the Lamplighter Inn North for the weekend of our May 21-22 launch in Walnut Grove, MO. You will need to call the hotel directly to receive this rate; it is not available when making reservations online. Tell the hotel clerk that you are attending the "NAR Walnut Creek Regional." You may need to clarify that the reservation is for the regional and not for NARAM, to avoid confusion.

Launch schedule updated

Our meeting last night was quite productive, so I'm happy to say that we have a lot to communicate to our membership. This is the first of three posts that should be going out today.

We have updated the launch schedule to add our monthly model rocket launches in Buder Park. We will mostly keep to the same schedule as last year, when we set a launch date for the Saturday following the monthly meeting (which put it on either the second or third Saturday of the month), with a couple of exceptions:

  • Due to conflicts with a couple of other events, the April launch is scheduled for April 23rd.
  • Since the regular launch day in July falls on the weekend before NARAM 58 begins, I am listing that event as tentative because a lot of people will probably be busy preparing for that event.

Please see the event calendar for details, including a lengthy discussion of the insurance and safety restrictions that go along with our park launches. If you've flown with us in the past, it will be nothing surprising, but we want to make sure everyone understands the rules - particularly that all flyers must be current paid NAR or Tripoli members to be covered by liability insurance, and this in turn is a requirement to participate directly in the launch. People who are not NAR or Tripoli members will not be permitted to fly their own rockets, although they can hand them over to NAR/Tripoli members to inspect and fly on their behalf. Non-NAR/Tripoli members will also be asked to sign a liability release.

If you have any questions about the event, please email admin@stlouisrocketry.com. And as always, check the website for up-to-date status on the day of the event before heading out. If you expect to arrive later than 11:00 am, please call (314) 630-7619 to make sure the range is still open - we will continue to fly past noon as long as the weather is good, the battery holds out, and people have rockets to fly.

March 26 Launch Cancelled

Unfortunately, we have learned of a conflict with the site which forces us to cancel the launch we were planning for March 26 near Addieville, IL. One of the landowners adjacent to the launch field has recently planted crops, and has withdrawn permission for us to retrieve rockets from their land, should they drift that direction.

We are still communicating with the landowners to see if there will be any time this spring when we can use this site. If not, we remain hopeful that we can launch there in the fall, and we are still working on obtaining an FAA waiver for this field.

The good news is that the May 21-22 launch at the Teeniemunde site near Walnut Grove, MO is still a GO! Hold on to those high-power rockets just a little bit longer, and join us there!

Two launches added to SLRA calendar

We are pleased to announce that two new launch events have been added to the SLRA calendar after last night's club meeting.

On March 26, we are planning to hold our first launch at a new field near Addieville, IL. We are still in the process of obtaining an FAA waiver for this site, so we do not know yet whether this will be a Class 1 launch (limited to 3.3 pounds / 1500 grams rocket weight and 125 grams propellant) or a full high-power launch. Another announcement will be made when we get that settled. Either way, this will be a great opportunity to get a look at the new field.

On May 21-22, SLRA will hold a NAR regional contest launch and high-power sport launch in cooperation with Teeniemunde Rocketry Club / Tripoli Mo-Kan, at their launch site near Walnut Grove, MO. This is the same field which will be used for NARAM 58, so again, it's a good chance to get accustomed to the location. Contest details can be found on our website by clicking on the event in the event calendar.

You will need to create an ID and log in to the website in order to see the event calendar. If you have trouble with the website, please email admin@stlouisrocketry.com and I will reply as soon as I can. Hope to see you there!
