TRA Mentors Needed

TRA is getting more deeply involved with IREC / Spaceport America Cup.  Part of this means they are soliciting flyers with mad skills who are able to help teams and potentially travel to New Mexico for the event.  NASA SLI offers a stipend to mentors travelling to Huntsville - $1000.  While there was talk of trying to come up with something similar for Spaceport, so far there is nothing available.  It is between a team (and their school) and the volunteer mentor to decide who is paying for what.  BTW, for those traveling to Las Cruces, it is far cheaper to fly to El Paso, rent a car and drive the rest of the way than it is to fly in Las Cruces.  Besides The Spaceport America Cup, there is the Argonia cup and other competitions (or there were before the pandemic and likely will be again).

Elaine RussellPosted:21 Dec 2020 03:19 AM Subject: Mentors for High Power Student Teams

The Tripoli Outreach Committee is looking for mentors for college, university, and high school student competition teams. The primary responsibility would be to ensure that students have the basic understanding of high-power rocket construction with emphasis on a safe flight and recovery. We would prefer that mentors be TRA L3 and will consider very experienced TRA L2 flyers for this.

Please reach out to flyers that you feel would be interested and have the skills for this opportunity and ask them if they would mind if a member of the Outreach Committee contacted them to discuss further.

Warm regards in the holiday season!

St. Louis Rocketry Association Forums

Good afternoon everyone.

At our last general meeting it was brought up by a few members that we should have our own local club forums for discussions that is not in a blog type format. We listened.

Introducing The St. Louis Rocketry Association Forums. We are using single sign on from the website to make it easy. Once you log into the website, click on the Forums tab in the menu bar to be taken to the forums.

There are both Public Forums, open to all registered users, club members or not, and private forums only for club members. If you are a club member and do not see the private forums, please let us know and we will resolve the issue quickly.

SLRA High Powered Rocket Launch Sunday, November 8th, 2020

St. Louis Rocketry Association (SLRA) is hosting a high powered rocket launch Sunday, November 8th, 2020 in Elsberry, MO.

If you are planning to attend and fly please email jay.draper@dmortproductions.com so we can have a proper count of attendees and let us know if you need any special requirements for your flight.

While this is an outdoor event where social distancing requirements are easily maintained most of the time, there may be instances at the RSO table and pads where a mask would be appropriate. Please BYOM (bring your own mask). If you are unable to maintain 6’ distance from others outside of your own personal group, please be kind and wear a mask. If you are feeling ill or have a fever, please stay home. There will be other high power launches you can attend.

  • LCO will photograph your flight card so please write legibly. The LCO will work from the digital copy and that will be retained by the club for flyer of record purpose.
  • Our waiver will be open from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. The range may or may not remain open until 4:30 pm, depending on how many people attend and how many rockets we want to fly.
  • Our waiver altitude is 6,500 feet AGL, with call-in windows to 14,500 feet AGL.
  • The club equipment trailer should arrive at the field around 9:00 am for us to begin setup. We would greatly appreciate as much help as possible with setup and cleanup, so please plan to arrive early if you can.
  • There will be neither food concessions nor restroom facilities at this site, but it is a very short drive into town for those needs.
  • Launch fees will be $0 for Low-Power Rockets (also called Model Rockets and class 1 rockets, with 1/4 A up to G80 engines) if you're a PAID SLRA member, and $3 if you're not a paid SLRA member; and $10 for High-Power Rockets (also called class 2 rockets) up to M.
  • We plan to have various sizes of launch pads set up, from the 1/8" model rocket rods up to 1515 rails. If you have any special needs, please reply to this email and we will see if we can accommodate you. In particular, if you need the "Monster Pad," please let us know ahead of time.
  • As always, please be courteous to our hosts and respectful of their property, including driving slowly on all farm roads. Once we get on site, we will clarify where it is okay to drive and park.

Location and directions to field:

Take MO-79 to Highway JJ, the first intersection south of the town of Elsberry. From this point, we should have signs up to guide you - but head east onto Old Missouri 79 (if you were coming north from the St. Louis area, this is a right turn) and continue straight onto the farm road where the main road takes another right turn.

Are You Interested in a Saturday Low Power Rocket Launch at Buder Park?

I received the following e-mail from our SLRA President, Dave Kovar.

Can you please send out an email to the club soliciting interest in having a club Low Power Rocket launch at Buder Park on Saturday?  The weather looks really good for a launch.   I'll assume responsibilities as LCO and will need to get the launch equipment from Charles Barnett.

We are having a High Power Rocket launch at Elsberry on Sunday so we'll see who's interested in attending a Saturday launch as well.

Happy Rocketeering!
Dave Kovar

If you will come to a Saturday launch at Buder Park, then e-mail Dave Kovar at:

High Power Launch November 8th 2020, Elsberry, MO.

After speaking with Dan W. we have a small follow-up.

There are a few people that help setup and run the launch that will be unavailable the 7th due to prior commitments.  Dan W. has an injury and may or may not be available at all for the weekend.

PLEASE REPLY TO JAY.DRAPER@DMORTPRODUCTIONS.COM IF YOU WANT TO ATTEND THE LAUNCH. By doing so we will be able to have the proper amount of equipment ready.
